BOARD MEMBER EOI – CLOSES 16th January 2026
Expressions of Interest are invited from people who want to join our board to help us achieve the Assembly 197 vision. Board positions are voluntary, with Directors expected to attend (in person or remotely) six board meetings a year, as well as our annual strategic planning weekend and AGM, and when possible, participate in Assembly 197 events. Most Board Meetings occur virtually. Any travel costs to attend meetings will be covered by Assembly 197.
WHO WE ARE
We are Assembly 197, a resoundingly Tasmanian, proudly regional, live arts centre on the banks of Launceston’s Kanamaluka River in the heart of Lutruwita/Tasmania. Led by Co-Creative Directors Adam Wheeler and Emma Porteus and governed by an active skills-based board, A197 emerged from the recent amalgamation of the flagship dance company Tasdance, and the internationally recognised development program Situate.
Care for our people is paramount to Assembly 197’s culture. Employing 60+ artists annually, including creative associates, provocateurs, independent artists, and teachers, we are committed to collaborative, long-form artmaking. Assembly 197 is passionate about how the physical body shares stories. Building on Tasdance’s 42-year commitment to pursuing choreographic excellence, we make large-scale works that celebrate the human form in performance. Assembly 197 provides professional development opportunities to build artists’ skills, capacity, and careers through Situate, Tasmanian Residency for Independent Practice (TRIP), choreographic workshops, and intensives. In addition, through our Artery program, we work in partnership with The Smith Family, Stompin, and schools to offer artist-led workshops and pathways for young creatives from Day Care to University.
Assembly 197 believes all bodies deserve to engage with and experience artistic encounters, and we invite you to join us on our journey.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND BACKGROUNDS, INCLUDING:
We are particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in finance, fundraising and sponsorship, governance and/or law, and would also welcome applications from those with experience in diverse areas such as arts administration, marketing, festivals and events, education, community and government engagement, or business.
Connections with the Australian arts community or broader business, political and community networks in Tasmania would also be an asset.
We particularly welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Applicants should be willing to engage actively in Assembly 197’s development, attend Board and committee meetings, and revel in and encourage others to experience and be inspired by our art-making.

Two opportunities to see Amber McCartney’s newest solo, Baby Girl.
After the success of Baby Girl's premiere at Mona Foma 2023, Launceston and Sydney audiences can get up close and intimate with Amber McCartney's newest solo.
Baby Girl is a performance of a persona whose physicality slides on a spectrum of her original body’s memories and her new being. This work investigates physicality, which involves emptying the body of familiarity to refill it with someone or something disturbingly otherworldly.

We have had the pleasure of having Nikki Tarling in the studio on a TRIP residency.
A note from Nikki
'My solo residency is focused towards exploring a physical language that emphasises slow cyclical body waves, hyper form and fluid dynamics. I'm curious about how the blend of these qualities may engage the viewers in a way that slowly funnels and potentially tips their perception of body and time. Alongside this, I'm interested in exploring performative and pedestrian mannerisms and how the two can merge as well as exist separately.'
Please join us for some wine, cheese, and art sharing. All welcome

No artist entering ASSEMBLY 197 leaves unchanged.
ASSEMBLY 197 is the home of TASDANCE (the company), SITUATE (the program), and ARTERY (the outreach).
TASDANCE fuses outstanding dance artists with innovative artists from other disciplines to create multifaceted contemporary dance. We know bodies love to dance and we passionately engage communities in dance making around Tasmania and beyond.
SITUATE places artists in conversations and situations that encourage them to think broadly and boldly; a space for investigation of practice – how it connects to place, artists, audience, and community.
ARTERY believes everyone should have the ability to experience art making by delivering bespoke programs individually designed to reach every corner of Tasmania.
ASSEMBLY 197 knows we make great art when we assemble together. ASSEMBLY 197 also hosts Stompin, Mudlark, and Rooke Circus as in-house organisations.

ASSEMBLY 197 – BACKGROUND INFORMATION
ASSEMBLY 197: TASMANIA’S LIVE ARTS CENTRE brings together a new generation of Tasmanian creative artists and leaders creating a fresh cultural asset and burst of cultural energy in the North and throughout Tasmania.
ASSEMBLY 197 is led by Adam Wheeler and Emma Porteus, two dedicated and passionate Tasmanian creative professionals, working with a cohort of exceptional artists from across Australia to create work, interrogate practice, and to engage and inspire communities.
ASSEMBLY 197 is resoundingly Tasmanian and proud to be regional.
ASSEMBLY 197 is a nationally significant artistic partnership between TASDANCE, the iconic Tasmanian contemporary dance company, and SITUATE, a leading Australian initiative dedicated to nurturing emerging and mid-career artists.
This collaboration is a key part of fulfilling Adam and Emma’s vision of Launceston being a centre for interdisciplinary art-making, progessive artistic endeavour, and engaging community outreach.
“We knew we were the keepers of a terrific arts space. A space that has been home to dance for 60 years, but now it is time for an expanded new era. A new platform for those interested in live arts to gather, share, and make. We believe the potential of ASSEMBLY 197 is immense, and we welcome all to join us on the journey as we expand the vision for 197 Wellington Street.” Adam and Emma
ASSEMBLY 197 is testament to an arts sector no longer wanting to work in isolation and the importance of exploring and initiating new ways of making and sharing art.
HOW ARE WE GOVERNED AND MANAGED?
ASSEMBLY 197 (Tasdance) is a company Limited by Guarantee, governed by a eight member skills-based volunteer board and supported by a small staff (4.5 core FTE) led by two Creative Directors who are responsible for the company’s overall management and operation, the development and realisation of artistic, development, and outreach programs.
HOW WE ARE FUNDED?
ASSEMBLY 197 receives funding and generates revenue from a variety of different sources and partnerships. Government arts funding is provided primarily by both the Tasmanian Government, through Arts Tasmania, and the Federal Government, through the Australia Council for the Arts, which represents about two-thirds of funding received over the last five years. tuylupa at Mona Foma Postponed
pakana kanaplila and Tasdance’s tuylupa postponed until later in 2022.
Due to the current impacts of the COVID pandemic in Tasmania, tuylupa, the world premiere by pakana kanaplila and Tasdance, will no longer proceed this month.
The production was due to premiere at Earl Arts Centre in Launceston on Friday 21 January, before travelling to nipaluna / Hobart the following week as part of the Mona Foma 2022 program.
Whilst this is a very disappointing decision to have to make, our number one priority is the health and safety of our artists, their community, as well as our team and audiences.
This work is a community story, and the decision to present tuylupa later ensures the safety of our Elder’s. We will keep the fire burning! We thank Mona Foma for their ongoing support and care.
Brian Ritchie, Festival Director, Mona Foma, says: ‘We’ve spent many years working alongside pakana kanaplila and Tasdance to bring tuylupa to audiences, and while we are so very disappointed by the delay to this year’s production, we’re willing to wait a little longer to see it through. Mona Foma remains committed to presenting the work at a later date.’
Ticketholders for all cancelled performances will be refunded by Mona Foma.
Mona Foma 2022 will take place from Friday 21 January through to Sunday 30 January 2022, with music and art taking place over two weekends—first in Launceston (Friday 21–Sunday 23 January) and then in nipaluna / Hobart (Friday 28–Sunday 30 January).

I can wear what you wear and become you, someone else can be me.
This structure could be me.
The undertaking of its stillness is epic.
This encounter is both brief and permanent.
Celebrated choreographer Jo Lloyd and Tasmanian blacksmith Pete Mattila have created Collision, a new work in collaboration with GUTS Dance and the Tasdance ensemble.
The ephemeral nature of dance contrasted with the permanency of a metallic sculpture has an impact, both brief and permanent. Contrasting metals forge and repel with oscillating timelines.
These elements collide to pose the question: What is possible here for those who are present?

Charlie Smith's Bending The WIND In Development Showing
Charlie Smith’s Bending The WIND In Development Showing
Thursday 12th - 4pm @ Tasdance
All Welcome
Please join us THURSDAY 12.08 - 4pm @ TASDANCE for a special showing of Charlie Smith’s Bending the WIND in development.
Charlie and the Second Echo Ensemble are spending the week at Tasdance as part of our annual Second Echo Ensemble Residency Program.
A note from Charlie Smith
We create a place where fans cease to turn and autumn leaves forget to fall.
Where weather warning sounds are heard and a lost kite surfer flies.
The wind grasps sentences and picks out words to string together and pass along, in whatever language needs to be heard.
Bending the WIND is a contemporary performance work that features live musicians, projections and theatre. Audiences will feel the wind, hear it and be moved by it. The finished work will feature a commissioned score by Dean Stevenson, including live performance by Warren Mason, Emily Sanzaro and the SEE ensemble.
Organically this work has evolved through residencies in significantly different places. This is now integral to its form and vision. The work is site specifically aware, with a respect for land and acknowledgement of ownership. We have committed to continue to create the work through additional residencies across the state. Feeling the wind in each place, finding the windiest places on the island to move in, listen to and create.
Lead Creatives: Charlie Smith, Dean Stevenson, Cary Littleford, Warren Mason
Partners: Tasmania Performs, Tasdance, Moonah Arts Centre, Nayri Niara, Arts House Melbourne
Funding: Arts Tasmania , RANT Regional Arts
