JOIN US IN REALISING A FRESH, NEW AND EXCITING VISION FOR THE ARTS IN TASMANIA AND BEYOND
ASSEMBLY 197 - Tasmania’s Live Arts Centre launches in 2022
ASSEMBLY 197 brings in a new era of genre busting art making, creating a fresh cultural asset and burst of energy in the north and throughout Tasmania. Together, we will transform live arts for and with Tasmanian communities, from our home at 197 Wellington Street, Launceston.
No artist entering ASSEMBLY 197 leaves unchanged.
ASSEMBLY 197 is the home of TASDANCE (the company), SITUATE (the program), and ARTERY (the outreach).
TASDANCE fuses outstanding dance artists with innovative artists from other disciplines to create multifaceted contemporary dance. We know bodies love to dance and we passionately engage communities in dance making around Tasmania and beyond.
SITUATE places artists in conversations and situations that encourage them to think broadly and boldly; a space for investigation of practice – how it connects to place, artists, audience, and community.
ARTERY believes everyone should have the ability to experience art making by delivering bespoke programs individually designed to reach every corner of Tasmania.
ASSEMBLY 197 knows we make great art when we assemble together. ASSEMBLY 197 also hosts Stompin, Mudlark, and Rooke Circus as in-house organisations.

ASSEMBLY 197 – BACKGROUND INFORMATION
ASSEMBLY 197: TASMANIA’S LIVE ARTS CENTRE brings together a new generation of Tasmanian creative artists and leaders creating a fresh cultural asset and burst of cultural energy in the North and throughout Tasmania.
ASSEMBLY 197 is led by Adam Wheeler and Emma Porteus, two dedicated and passionate Tasmanian creative professionals, working with a cohort of exceptional artists from across Australia to create work, interrogate practice, and to engage and inspire communities.
ASSEMBLY 197 is resoundingly Tasmanian and proud to be regional.
ASSEMBLY 197 is a nationally significant artistic partnership between TASDANCE, the iconic Tasmanian contemporary dance company, and SITUATE, a leading Australian initiative dedicated to nurturing emerging and mid-career artists.
This collaboration is a key part of fulfilling Adam and Emma’s vision of Launceston being a centre for interdisciplinary art-making, progessive artistic endeavour, and engaging community outreach.
“We knew we were the keepers of a terrific arts space. A space that has been home to dance for 60 years, but now it is time for an expanded new era. A new platform for those interested in live arts to gather, share, and make. We believe the potential of ASSEMBLY 197 is immense, and we welcome all to join us on the journey as we expand the vision for 197 Wellington Street.” Adam and Emma
ASSEMBLY 197 is testament to an arts sector no longer wanting to work in isolation and the importance of exploring and initiating new ways of making and sharing art.
HOW ARE WE GOVERNED AND MANAGED?
ASSEMBLY 197 (Tasdance) is a company Limited by Guarantee, governed by a eight member skills-based volunteer board and supported by a small staff (4.5 core FTE) led by two Creative Directors who are responsible for the company’s overall management and operation, the development and realisation of artistic, development, and outreach programs.
HOW WE ARE FUNDED?
ASSEMBLY 197 receives funding and generates revenue from a variety of different sources and partnerships. Government arts funding is provided primarily by both the Tasmanian Government, through Arts Tasmania, and the Federal Government, through the Australia Council for the Arts, which represents about two-thirds of funding received over the last five years. A further third of our revenue is generated through our Public Program and project fees, philanthropy, local funding, private sponsorship and other State and Federal government funding.
WHERE ARE WE BASED?
ASSEMBLY 197 is based in a well-positioned heritage building with offices, a large dance studio/ creative development and performance space set in a heritage garden, and a small self-contained apartment all in the heart of Launceston at 197 Wellington Street. Our home helps us build our identity and community presence and engagement, but also enables us to be a creative hub providing space to other creative partners. Whilst based in Launceston our artistic activity reaches across Tasmania, the Australian mainland, and internationally. Board meetings include Directors who attend in-person in Launceston, and those who attend virtually via Zoom.
