We’re excited to kick off 2026 by welcoming Feras Shaheen to Launceston as our first artist in residence for the year!
Over the coming month, Feras will work with the northern arts community, sparking vital conversations and activating dance as a powerful space for cultural expression, connection and creative change.
Feras will spend two weeks with Assembly 197 and Tasdance, sharing his practice, collaborating, and shaping new ideas with local artists and community.
THURSDAY 22 JAN 6PM – 8PM
An introduction to Palestinian Dabke:
Dabke is a folk dance from Bilad al-Sham (The Levant) commonly seen in celebrations but also acts as a symbol of resistance. Feras will be going through the foundations of the dance, the music and the history. Bring your comfy shoes! No dance experience required. All ages welcome.
TUESDAY 27 JAN 6PM – 8PM
Sessions Event: Dance Dance Intifada
A beginners street/club dance workshop + jam that shares the basics of freestyle dance while looking into the historical patterns of different music and dance styles and their social, political and economical origins. Bring your comfy shoes! Some dance or music experience required. All ages welcome.

Progressive Except For _________ (+Food):
A space where artists from different disciplines are invited to discuss the current Australian art sector and its challenges with political pressure, censorship and Palestine. Asking questions about systemic racism, the illusion of progressiveness, mainstream media's role and the impacts on indigenous people from all around the world. Some snacks provided, feel free to bring a plate of your favourite dish!
