James started dance at the Canberra Dance Development Centre and at Quantum Leap youth dance company in 2001. He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2006, where he worked with choreographers Becky Hilton, Neil Adams, Anna Smith, Stephanie Lake and Garry Stewart.
In January 2007 James travelled to New Zealand to work with Raewyn Hill on the first development of her new work Vespers of Sorrow. He returned to begin a contract with Tasdance for Mercy: a dance for the forgotten also choreographed by Raewyn Hill. Since joining Tasdance James has worked with Fiona Reilly, Shaun Parker, Anna Smith and Natalie Cursio touring works to New Zealand, Tasmania and regional New South Wales and Victoria.
James has performed for Cadi McCarthy Company in Shambles and for Natalie Cursio in With a Bullet, the album project, in a work choreographed by Bec Reid. James has taught at Stompin Youth Dance Company and at Launceston College. He was nominated as Dancer to Watch the 2007 Dance Australia Critics' Choice. James has most recently performed in the Tasdance production Parenthesis.
