Dance Marinara - part of a major community dance project
The Dance Project is an initiative led by Tasmanian Regional Arts in partnership with Tasdance, Bust a MOVE and Mature Artists Dance Experience (MADE) . The Dance Project has engaged three Tasmanian regions, in the North West, North East and in the South evolving three new dance events from the heart of each community over 2011 and 2012.
Dance Marinara (Tasdance) has engaged people of all ages in thinking about dance and its significance in their lives. Initially this was through remembering and talking and then through participation in a series of workshops that has transformed these movements, music and costumes of the dance remembered and shared into a dance experience. "Dance then and now and what it means to the people on the NW Coast of Tasmania."
"Dance then and now and what it means to the people on the NW Coast of Tasmania."
The creative team Sarah Fiddaman and Malcolm McMillan have used creative tasks to flesh out what dance means to the participants and weave the ideas together meaningfully. Their raw materials for choreographic inspiration has been the personal reflections, stories and dreams of participants; the social aspect of dance and the way dance can tie a community together. There has been an emphasis on finding ways to bring different styles of dance together in a melting-pot or Marinara of dance, using contemporary dance and choreography as the sauce.
The Creative Development Workshops have been held at the Turners Beach Hall every weekend in March, Saturday and Sunday 1-6pm. These workshops have been provided free of charge.
The final performance for Dance Marinara is at the Devonport Entertainment & Convention Centre on Saturday March 31 at 7pm.
