"Their dancing is youthful in both content and form, but disciplined, with strong dramatic appeal and startling and pleasing patterns"
Wal Eastman, The Mercury, Friday May 8, 1998
Fish Fingers was a National Science Week project linking science and the arts, and the first of the hugely successful student performed productions. TasDance held workshops for senior secondary students from around Tasmania and then offered them the opportunity to audition for a place in the dance company which created the resulting performance of Fish Fingers.
Fish Fingers was a joint initiative between the Department of Education, Community Cultural Development and Tasdance. Funding was provided by the National Science Week Grant Committee and was one of forty projects funded this year. 1998 was the International Year of the Ocean and as a fitting tribute, this project focused on life underwater and unique Tasmanian marine species, in particular the Tasmanian hand fish (Brachionichthyidae) an endangered species.
Fish Fingers, an exciting visual performance, was presented in Launceston, Ulverstone and Hobart during National Science Week. The performance incorporated the talents of choreographer Jay Watson, cellist Bronwyn Weaver, composer Myles Mumford and costume, set and lighting designer Odette Shadbolt under the artistic direction of Annie Greig.
